When was the organization established? How long has it been active in Flagstaff?
Big Brothers Big Sisters of America was established in New York City in 1904. The Flagstaff affiliate has been an active part of the local community since 1967.
What does the organization do? What is your main goal/purpose?
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flagstaff’s (BBBSF) mission is to help children succeed by matching them with appropriate adult mentors. Our vision is to bring a Big Brother or Big Sister relationship to every child who needs and wants one.
How do people get involved (can people volunteer, give donations, etc)?
There are a number of ways to get involved with BBBSF. The number one option is to volunteer a few hours per week as a Big Brother or Big Sister. Male volunteers are especially needed as we currently have a waiting list for potential Little Brothers. A Big can be matched with a Little in the Community or School Based programs, or work with a group of kids and other mentors in the Step Up program in collaboration with the Juvenile Courts.
If you would like to contribute but do not have the time to volunteer, consider becoming a sponsor for an event or activity, an event volunteer, a member of our Street Team to pass out information leading up to events, or donate in a number of ways. Donations of gift cards, vouchers, and passes are great for our Bigs and Littles to use when they meet. Additionally, any gently used clothes, household items, and lost and found collections can be donated to our Clothes For Kids’ Sake program bins around town, or you can call us to schedule a pickup for big batches or larger items.
What is your organization seeking from the community? Cash donations? Participation in events? In-kind donations? This is your chance to tell the reader how they can help!
Our organization cannot continue the good work we strive to do without the help of the Flagstaff community! Consider becoming a Big or Little, donor, sponsor, or volunteer for an event or with our Street Team.
Do you have any special events coming up?
Our 5th Annual Golf Tournament is May 9th at Aspen Valley Golf Club! Give us a call to sign up your foursome or to sponsor a tee or flag. Our Dave McKay Memorial Half Marathon & 5K is Saturday, August 9th. We will soon be opening up our registration for this fun event. The Annual Big Night Out casino night will be in November at the Double Tree by Hilton (formerly the Woodlands Hotel), and our Bowl For Kids’ Sake will be next February at Starlite Lanes.
What is your favorite part about doing business in Flagstaff and serving our community?
Our favorite part of what we do is making new Big and Little matches and seeing them thrive! We believe every child has the inherent ability to succeed, and having a mentor has been proven to help children do better in school, increase their confidence, and stay out of trouble. In fact, children with a positive mentor are 52% less likely to skip school and 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs. Every match means one more child has the chance to realize their potential. With the help of our community, we can continue to encourage these positive results.
