When was the organization established? How long has it been active in Flagstaff?
JLB Project was founded in 2007 by Anna and Mike LaBenz following the loss of their son JLB (Jack’s Little Brother) to an umbilical cord accident at full-term. The founded JLB Project to make the journey different for other families. JLB Project provides care at Flagstaff Medical Center and Verde Valley Medical Center. Our services are available to anyone who has suffered the loss of a baby.

What does the organization do? What is your main goal/purpose?
JLB Project’s mission is to make the journey easier for families who have lost a baby to miscarriage, stillbirth or infant death through supportive care, bereavement services, and education.

JLB Project is with the family every step of their journey. The services provided are customized to each family’s needs and wishes. Our trained care team members are professional and extremely sensitive to the loss of a child.

We offer the following in-hospital services:

  • Sitting beside with the family during the loss
  • Customized care bag containing clothing and blanket for baby, keepsakes, grief literature for the entire family, teddy bears to fill empty arms, and comfort items for Mom
  • Professional photography services
  • Follow-up care

We offer the following services to anyone who has suffered the loss of a baby:

  • Bi-monthly Heart Work grief group, co-facilitated by JLB Project co-founder Anna LaBenz and Dr. Chris Gunn
  • A community of families who know and understand the unimaginable loss of a child
  • Customized care bag containing grief literature and other items
  • Heart Work grief workshops twice per year

JLB Project is working to create a Children’s Garden to be a positive place of emotional healing for all members of the Flagstaff community and offer a public remembrance of all children lost. So often the loss of a child is a silent and hidden grief and it is our hope we can establish a public space outside of the cemetery to celebrate our children.
